Val Guest was the director of the Quatermass pictures. This was pure, British sci-fi, something which is rare today.
In the first Quatermass film, I have a vivid memory of a scene in which old cars are driving into a space-age looking refinery. Deliciously incongruous, the refinery made the cars look old, the cars made the refinery look more modern.
While the special effects were primitive by today's standards, Guest's film had something very real and mysterious about them which I greatly enjoy. I had the great pleasure of meeting Val Guest when he was invited to an industry lunch. He was a lovely man.
