Influences

Jeff Lynne (b. 1947) (far right), with members of the Electric Light Orchestra

I grew up with E.L.O. in the 1970s and loved the way Jeff Lynne arranged for rock group with synths and small numbers of amplified strings. He treated these with effects boxes and arranged and processed his backing vocals cleverly. My favourite tracks of his are Mr Blue Sky, Evil Woman, Birmingham Blues and Magic with pop genius John Farrar and Olivia Newton-John. Lynne is an inspirational, first-rate song-writer and producer.

The music came from spending an inordinate amount of time messing about with chords and tunes and words and inversions and relative minors and diminished sevenths and augmented fifths and beginnings and middle bits and endings and running orders and singing and guitars and pianos and equalizers and compressors and AMSs and phantom power and slap echo and harmonies and ambient snare drums and Fender Telecasters and old microphones and double tracking and stuff.
