I was mesmerised by the music of the group Imagination in the 1980s. It was pop meets sleazy tribal electro camp and I loved it. Album after album delivered the goods: Body Talk (1981), In the Heat of the Night (1982) and Scandalous (1983). Favourite tracks?: Body Talk, Flashback, In the Heat of the Night, Music & Lights, Just an Illusion, Changes, New Dimension, State of Love and Looking at Midnight. You'll recognise the album Scandalous because the group are dressed in fetching bin liners!
Behind the group was producer Tony Swain (with S. Jolley) who went on to produce Alison Moyet's album Alf (1984), also a brilliant record.
I bought the 'Best of Imagination' CD after wearing down my vinyl, to find that only 7" edits had been included. This taught me the extent to which Swain's production depended on repetition and build-up to en-trance the listener. The analogue synth bass lines are wonderful.
I learned recently that Tony Swain started out as a cameraman on The Muppet Show at ATV studios. I also worked as an actor at the Elstree studios in 1978.
